A-SING-ALONG

Want to sing with your favorite band? Well, tune up your "geetar", watch the bouncing ball, and follow the chords. Wait for the bouncing ball to land on the words. You can stop, start, replay by using the icons under the song. Make sure your speakers are turned on for this one. The first link (below) is the main page. The second link (below) is to the song "Words" by the BeeGees. This is a very clever site, well designed, and very enjoyable.

WEATHER WATCHER

Weather.com has a nice little feature called Weather Anywhere® that you can download for FREE, called Desktop Weather. I downloaded it to my computer and it works quite well as long as I'm on the internet. If you are not connected to the internet, the last recorded temperature will sit in the task bar. The task bar reading is quite small. For easy reading, one click on the tiny icon and a large window opens up. On my computer, I have to minimize any open applications to see the larger weather window. They also offer weather forecasts in your e-mail. You can create a customized weather web page, receive timely severe weather alerts on your cellular phone or pager, and include weather on your web site. I was asked to pick from a list of personal interests and this choice is added to the weather conditions on the desktop. I picked "travel" and was often left with a message saying the site could not be found. Apparently this is an advertising ploy that has not been well-developed. I changed to "recreation" with better results. It's easy enough to play around with it to eventually get what you want.

NEW CHIPS ARE IN CONTROL

Computer chip manufacturers are producing chips that are becoming smarter than ever. Here are a few examples of what the new chips can do or prevent you from doing something.

  • Some inkjet printers have chips in their ink cartridges that prevent operation if the cartridge has been refilled.
  • Cell phones sometimes come with chips in their batteries that prevent operation if the battery isn't the right brand.
  • Compact discs can have copy-protection systems that keep them from being played in personal computer drives.
  • DVD players are programmed to receive specific signals.

Products have usually, in the past, been controlled by contracts and licensing and copyrights. Now, the chips are doing the controlling. Microsoft recently announced Palladium, a plan for creating secure computing platforms, however Palladium architecture creates an operating environment that allows only digitally signed software to be executed. That should, in principle, help eliminate computer viruses and other sorts of security problems. But Palladium can also be used for digital-rights management on your PC. This means that only certified programs could be run, and only certified content could be displayed.

VOCABULARY

SERVER

A computer system in a network that is shared by multiple users. A server may have a keyboard, monitor and mouse directly attached, or one keyboard, monitor and mouse may connect to any number of servers via a switch. Stand-alone PCs and Macs can also function as a server to other users on the network even though they serve as a single workstation to one user, common in small offices. Most of the time, servers are stand alone and not used personally. In large enterprises, servers are often mounted in racks by the dozens, hundreds and even thousands (a server farm). The term "server" may refer to both the hardware and software (the entire computer system) or just the software that performs the service. Servers are classified by their purpose. The most common are: application server, audio server, database server, fax server, file server, intranet server, mail server, merchant server, modem server, network access server, print server, proxy server, remote access server, telephony server, terminal server, video server, Web server.   http://www.foldoc.org/

VOCABULARY

KVM

Keyboard Video Mouse switch is a device used to connect one keyboard, one mouse and one monitor to two or more computers. KVM switches are used to save space on a desktop when two or more computers are routinely used. They are also widely used to control server farms, where it is only necessary to gain access to each machine periodically. Switches often use special cables that combine keyboard, monitor and mouse cables into one port at the switch end.
