With PopUp Killer, you will be able to browse the web without being molested by those annoying ads that popup when you visit some web sites. With features such as the Smart! engine, PopUp Killer can identify possible popups and close them even before you can see them. You can configure it to produce sounds when it kills a popup. This new release is even able to kill the new GeoCities box and close those annoying dialogs presented by some web sites that force you to click on them to continue. Since early 1994, PopUp Killer has been the most advanced and featured popup killing machine; but, of course, the only way for you to experience how powerful it is and how much have you been missing for not using it is to download it and run it for a test drive. We're sure you'll be surprised!" This is an approximately six minute download, and it's free--at this link:

VOCABULARY
The Basic Input/Output System, known as the BIOS, is a basic set of instructions used when a computer starts. The instructions are loaded from ROM chips and start up the hard disk so that the operating system can be loaded and the system can boot up. Some ROM chips can be updated with new BIOS instructions--these are usually referred to as EEPROMs or flash BIOS's.

TEN O'CLOCK TECH: CREATE A VIRTUAL YOU
Arik Hesseldahl, Forbes.com 08.23.01, 10:00 AM ET.
Graphics chip company Matrox, based in Montreal, Canada, has released a new graphics insert card for personal computers that, when combined with its bundled software, will let you create a virtual copy of your talking head for use as an online communications tool or for giving presentations. It is called the Millenium G550 and it uses a technology the company calls Head casting to create a computer-animated version of you for use in voiceover Internet chats that Matrox says could be a low-cost substitute for video conferencing. To use it, you don't even need to have a high-speed Internet connection in your home. A standard 56-kilobit-per-second (Kbps) dialup modem will work just fine. To run the program on your PC, the company recommends you have a PC with a processor speed of at least 450 megahertz, 128 megabytes of RAM and a 56-Kbps modem. You'll also need a microphone and DVD-ROM drive. The package supports several versions of Windows, including Windows 2000, Me, 98 and forthcoming versions of Windows XP. The Linux operating system is also supported, but the Virtual Presenter software only works with PowerPoint 2000 or PowerPoint XP. FIND OUT MORE HERE: http://forbes.com/2001/08/23/0823tentech.html

Don't forget to visit the Computer Club often where you will find calendars listing club events, the Soundboard, and other Club links.
Think you're safe from worms? Guess again. These devious programs, which replicate by weaving around networks, are starting to show up in places I never expected. Two of the most recent worms were found lurking in Microsoft MSN Messenger and Adobe Acrobat files. Both are harmless, but they demonstrate how vulnerable our PCs are to smart bad "guys." First, the MSN Messenger worm: This pest, called W32/Annoying.Worm, appears in your instant messaging session masquerading as a picture file. If you click the file (named pic1234.exe), a fake error message will pop up, telling you that the file has been corrupted. Then the worm infects your system. Afterward, every time you start your PC, the sneaky program loads too. The worm watches for you to begin a chat session and then pretends to be you. You'll see the worm shoot a message to your chat-mate that asks, "Hey, want me to send my new pic?" If the other person answers with "yes," "sure," or other similar affirmatives, it whisks off a copy of itself to the unsuspecting victim, and the cycle starts all over again. Head over to Symantec or McAfee to get worm-removal instructions. If you run Symantec's Norton AntiVirus software, any virus definition file dated August 8 or later will protect your PC. Any McAfee DAT (virus definition) file numbered 4154 or later will block the worm's chokehold.

PROGRAMS INSTALLED ON THE WEB COMPUTERS
A suggestion gleaned from "For the good of the Club" segment of the general meeting has resulted in the compilation of a list of programs installed on The Web computers. The Board of Directors decided that this is an excellent idea and has posted the list in The Web. If you are interested in trying a program that we have, please visit The Web during Open House and have fun sampling the available programs. We would be inclined to purchase a program that has wide appeal to the members. -- The Board of Directors

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE MESSAGE BOARD?
The message board is intended to allow visitors to our site to register the fact that they have visited us and to comment as they see fit regarding their experience encountered during this visit. It is an opportunity for club members to ask questions that have been plaguing them. It is anticipated that many members may have experienced various problems and would be willing to share their solutions with others. Answers to questions are solicited from all visitors to our site. Don't hesitate to share your knowledge with others.-- Web Master

The HVCC Board of Directors has initiated a drawing to be held at each monthly meeting. This was instituted at the meeting of September 12. The lucky winner was Diana Scott, our Soundboard Editor. The drawing prize was a Voucher entitling the winner to a one-year membership extension.
Each month there will be a different prize, which may be an article of hardware, software, etc., or a gift certificate of some product or service.-The Board of Directors
Thank you so much for the Voucher. It was quite a surprise for me to win and was very much appreciated. -Diana Scott

It said, "Insert disk #3," but only two will fit.
The Board of Directors has been asked to clarify club policy regarding services involving computer problems. The Call Help Line are volunteers who will try to walk you through a computer problem that you may be experiencing. If that does not resolve the glitch, it is suggested that you bring the specifics of your problem to one of our Open Houses (Tue. 1-3PM and Thur. 1-3PM). Members are encouraged to offer volunteer assistance when they are able. If none of these suggestions fixes the problem, your only recourse is to seek professional help. It is not the Club's policy to recommend professional computer technicians.
