**************** CLASSES ARE NOW LISTED AT THE BOTTOM OF PAGE CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS. **************** trivia AOL has 29 million subscribers; raising their prices $1.95 per month means an additional $2,940,600,000 a year! Courtesy: http://www.lockergnome.com **************** S.O.S. - HVCC Help Line: Ken Pelletier 264-2310 Bob Greene 264-9747 S.O.S. - HVCC Help Line The names posted above are volunteers who will try to walk you through a computer problem that you may be experiencing. If that does not resolve the glitch, it is suggested that you bring the specifics of your problem to one of our Open Houses (Tues. & Thur., Classifieds: For computer club members only, to sell or to swap or to offer free computer-related stuff that you just don't want or need anymore. You'll find it at: www.hvcomputerclub.org/Classified.html Question: Recently, I've been getting a lot of marketing e-mail in my Inbox, some of it pretty offensive. I've answered "Take me off your list" or "Unsubscribe" to each message, but they keep coming. What can I do to stop them? Answer: What you're getting is unsolicited bulk commercial e-mail, otherwise known as "spam". The first thing you should do, starting now, is NEVER RESPOND TO SUCH MESSAGES IN ANY WAY. The spam senders only take such replies as evidence that your e-mail address is valid. If you get such messages in the future, again, DO NOT REPLY to them. Delete the messages from your Inbox. Contributed by Joe Franzino ***************** Cleaning tip: If your mouse is difficult to move, the roller ball on the bottom can usually be removed and cleaned and then replaced quite easily. However, TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER BEFORE doing this. The static electricity that is generated by your touch can short circuit the mouse, and even the keyboard, through the wiring system. ***************** Mac FaqsThanks to Apple, you can have easy no-cost access to the knowledge and advice of Mac users more experienced than you are at http://www.apple.com. When the home page opens, click on the tab labeled SUPPORT, then, in the next window, on DISCUSSIONS. You will be asked to log in, or register if you haven't already done so, and then you will be taken to the DISCUSSIONS window where you can select your area of interest from HARDWARE PRODUCTS, SYSTEM SOFTWARE, SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS (e.g., APPLEWORKS) and NETWORKING AND SERVICES. Each of these headings has a list of topics to allow you to further narrow your search to your specific need. Quite often the answer to your question can be found among those already posted. If not, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on ADD TOPIC on the far left. I've never had to wait very long for answers. If your system is running smoothly, this site is worth exploring for future reference, but try not to be discouraged by the variety of problems you'll see reported there. Just thank your lucky stars, cross your fingers and rock on. Looking for interesting MAC fonts? Visit the Macintosh Font Vault at www.erik.co.uk/font which contains a treasure trove of freeware and shareware. Once you BOOKMARK this site you will never lack the appropriate font for a document. This column was contributed by Joyce Ware ***************** ~ A Poem For Computer Users Over 30 ~A computer was something on TV From a science fiction show of note. A window was something you hated to clean; And ram was the cousin of a goat. Meg was the name of my girlfriend, And gig was a job for the nights. Now they all mean different things, And that really mega bytes. An application was for employment; A program was a TV show; A cursor used profanity; A keyboard was a piano. Memory was something that you lost with age; A CD was a bank account; And if you had a 3-in. floppy; You hoped nobody ever found out. Compress was something you did to the garbage, Not something you did to a file. And if you unzipped anything in public, You'd be in jail for a while. Log on was adding wood to the fire, Hard drive was a long trip on the road. A mouse pad was where a mouse lived, And a backup happened to your commode. You cut with a pocket knife; You pasted with glue; A web was a spider's home; A virus was the flu. I guess I'll stick to my pad and paper, And the memory in my head. I hear nobody's been killed in a computer crash. But I've heard it plenty times said ! From Norie Ziegler ****************

The club has installed the Mavis Bacon, Teaching Yourself To Type, program. It is currently installed on one machine and can be utilized by any club member or villager during Open House hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Scanning There are two scanners at The Web. These can be utilized by any club member or villager during the "Open House" hours. Pictures can be scanned and enhanced, printed documents can be OCR'd (Optical Character Recognition), and film strips or slides can be scanned on at least one or the other scanner. Large Downloads The average download speed within the village using a 56K modem is usually in the vicinity of 2K/sec. Keeping this in mind to download a 5mb file would take 5,000kb/2kb = 2,500sec. 2,500sec/60 = 41+min. The download speeds vary over the time of download; this example could take over an hour. With this, certain assumptions are made such as your provider (ISP) doesn't disconnect you just before the download is complete, requiring a completely new download attempt, or several disconnects occur making the download impossible. You might like to consider downloading large files at "The Web." "The Web" has a DSL connection which is a high speed internet connection providing download speeds of as much as 110kb/sec. Thus in the example above, your download time would be closer to 3 min. How then do we get such a large file from "The Web" to your computer. This is now quite easy. The file is copied to a CD-R, CD-ROM disk, which you put into your CD-ROM drive and copy to your hard drive. Not only have you captured the file you wanted but you now also have a permanent disk if reinstalling is needed or sharing with other computer users is desired. Multiple files can be copied to the CD-R, as much as 700mb. Classes for December, 2001 Computing Basics I
