CLEAN UP YOUR IMAGE

Pictures are worth a thousand words; especially on the Web where pages of text can download in the time it takes for a single image to load. Your images may be sub-zero cool, but if they're too plump, few people will stick around long enough to see them. Some ways to shrinky-dink the size of your images include: choosing a GIF over a JPEG, taking advantage of the browser's caching capabilities, and creating small images that can scale into larger ones. The many lessons found in Webmonkey's Site Optimization Tutorial cover all that, and more:

ZAP THE URBAN LEGENDS

The tales of stolen kidneys, HIV-infected pay phones, and ad nauseum will no doubt persist, but we have to applaud the efforts of sites such as http://www.snopes2.com. Wouldn't it be nice if everyone would check out these stories without being so quick to pass them on? Nice, yes, but also unlikely.

TIME TO GARDEN

"Insect Alert! Be on the lookout for spring aphids. Treat only with organic controls. Release Ladybugs or spray with a mild soap and water solution. Liquid Seaweed helps repel spider mites." Got your attention? I found this interesting site and since gardening season is commencing, this should be most appropriate.

HOW TO CORRECT NETSCAPE COOKIES

Netscape 6.2 has problems accessing several sites and it sends messages telling you to enable cookies. If you still get the same message after trying to resolve the problem, try this: If you have enabled all cookies (EDIT > PREFERENCES > PRIVACY AND SECURITY > COOKIES > ENABLE ALL COOKIES), and you still get that message, perhaps your browser is still set to block specific cookies. Try TASKS > PRIVACY AND SECURITY > COOKIE MANAGER > UNBLOCK COOKIES FROM THIS SITE. If that still doesn't work, you should contact Netscape's technical support personnel. LINK:

SELECTIVE PRINTING NETSCAPE COMMUNICATOR

Sometimes we want to print a selected passage from a Web page, and that's easy with MS Internet Explorer. Just highlight the desired text, use CTRL + P, and in the Print window, click on SELECTION from the Print Range selection, then OK. The same capability does not exist with Netscape Communicator where the SELECTION option is grayed out in the Print window. Grayed out areas mean that function cannot be used.

SPAM COMBAT.

A very useful site, if you're hunting down and dealing with spammers, is at http://combat.uxn.com . You'll find a couple of Whois applications, an NS lookup, trace route, PING, and a dozen or so other utilities all on one page for easy access.

VOCABULARY

Hop: The link between two network/Internet nodes or network devices. Typically, an Internet protocol (IP) packet traveling from coast to coast via the Internet can "hop" through more than a dozen routers.

Router: A device that forwards data packets from one local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN) to another. A router sends the packets based on the most expedient route (traffic load, line costs, speed, bad lines, etc.).

Traceroute: (“Tracert”) An Internet utility that traces the route from the client machine to the remote host being contacted. It reports the IP addresses of all the routers in between.

Ping: A common Internet utility used to determine whether a particular IP address is online by sending out a packet (block of data) and waiting for a response. These terms are from:           http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/internet_glossary.asp

HAIKU POETRY

Your file was so big.
It might be very useful.
But now it is gone.
The Web site you seek
Cannot be located, but
Countless more exist.
Chaos reigns within.
Reflect, repent, and reboot.
Order shall return.
Program aborting:
Close all that you have worked on.
You ask far too much.
Isn't that better than
"your computer has performed an illegal operation?"

Members are encouraged to offer volunteer assistance when they are able. If none of these suggestions fixes the problem, your only recourse is to seek professional help. It is not the Club's policy to recommend professional computer technicians.
