A law passed by the Connecticut General Assembly took effect on January 1, 2001 allowing consumers to place their names on a "No Call" list maintained by the Department of Consumer Protection, if they choose not to receive telephone solicitations. Businesses located both in and outside Connecticut will be prohibited from calling people on the "No Call" list and from including consumer's names on marketing lists compiled for sale to others. The law also prohibits businesses from blocking the caller ID feature on your telephone and from re-selling your name to other solicitors. There are exemptions from the "No Call" policy. Check the website to read more. The quickest way to submit your request is by E-mail. To do so simply complete the form on the web site and click the "Submit" button. Your request will be transmitted electronically to the Consumer Protection, Trade Practices Division: http://www.state.ct.us/dcp/nocall.htm
ALSO AVAILABLE FROM THE LINK BELOW: Check or verify an active license, permit and/or registration for Home Improvement Contractors and All Other Licensees regulated by the Department of Consumer Protection (DCP). You may access disciplinary actions, request complaint information and in some cases view actual complaints that have been filed with the agency. http://www.dcpaccess.state.ct.us/verify.htm

JAVA
Sun Microsystems' Java is a programming language for adding animation and other action to Web sites. The small applications (applets) can play back on any graphical system that's Web-ready. Your Web browser has to be Java-capable for you to see it. According to Sun's description, Java is a "simple, object-oriented, distributed, interpreted, robust, secure, architecture-neutral, portable, high-performance, multithreaded, dynamic, buzzword-compliant, general-purpose programming language." And Sun should know.
JAVASCRIPT
Designed by Sun Microsystems and Netscape as an easy-to-use adjunct to the Java programming language, JavaScript code can be added to standard HTML pages to create interactive documents. As a result, JavaScript has found considerable use in the creation of interactive Web-based forms. Most modern browsers, including those from Microsoft and Netscape, contain JavaScript support.
BETA SOFTWARE
Beta versions of commercial software are work-in-progress test copies released prior to the full version. They're used to put the product through real-world tests and to ferret out bugs before the finished software hits the shelves. Betas often expire after a period of time, usually when the full version or the next beta is released. Be warned: if you decide to experiment with betas, expect an occasional software glitch or system crash

MENU BAR
Do you find that when you click on the menu bar (File, Edit, View, Insert, Format, Tools, Table, Windows, Help) in MS Office programs such as Word, Excel, etc., that the pop-down menu only shows part of the selections? After a short pause, the rest of the selections appear as the menu fully extends. If you want to change the setting to eliminate the pause so that the full menu is always shown, do the following: 1. On your top toolbar, click the toolbar options DOWN ARROW at the far right end of the Toolbar. 2. Point to ADD OR REMOVE BUTTONS, and then click CUSTOMIZE (usually at the bottom of the drop-down menu). 3. Click the OPTIONS tab. 4. Select the ALWAYS SHOW FULL MENUS check box.5. Click on "Close" Note: Changing this setting affects all of your Microsoft Office programs.By default, the Standard and Formatting built-in toolbars are docked side by side below the menu bar.

THE HV COMPUTER CLUB PICNIC
Another success!
There was plenty of food and fun and great conversation for all who attended. The weather held up and the sun was shining. The Social Committee put together another fabulous event for all of us to enjoy. We still need volunteers to help out with these events if they are to continue. A Volunteer Social Chairperson is also needed to organize the activities of the committee. Please call Ken Pelletier to volunteer your help and expertise with the many chores that are necessary for the continuance of these popular social gatherings. Please Call & Offer Your Volunteer Services

All help personnel are volunteers who will try to walk you through a computer problem that you may be experiencing. If that does not resolve the problem, it is suggested that you bring the specifics of your problem to our Open House (Tues. & Thur., 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.). Members are encouraged to offer volunteer assistance when they are able. If none of these suggestions fixes the problem, your only recourse is to seek professional help. It is not the Club's policy to recommend professional computer technicians. Usually the best technical help will come from the manufacturer of your computer and you may even be under a warranty program.

This thousand-dollar screen dies
