PRESIDENT'S CORNER

In the past, the membership has been seriously confused as to when their membership was up for renewal. This has resulted in an unusual number of delayed renewals, an unnecessary number of reminder cards to be mailed, and chaos for the members, the membership committee, and the Treasurer.

Effective immediately the HVCC will send renewal cards to each member during their month of renewal, apprising them, this is the time to renew, how to renew, and the dues amount to render. February is the first full month in which these cards are being sent. In addition, cards are being sent to members whose renewal dates have passed in order to make them aware that we are not in receipt of their renewals at the time of this notice.

Everyone I have spoken with about this change has enthusiastically endorsed it as the only way to streamline this process. The Board and I are confident this will improve the overall operation of the club.

POWERPOINT VIEWER.

PowerPoint is an impressive software package and it has a hefty price tag. If you are interested only in opening and viewing PowerPoint presentations, download the free PowerPoint Viewer for Windows95/98/2000/NT/ME at:

http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/9798/ppview97.aspx

It supports PowerPoint 2000 files as well as those files created with previous versions of PowerPoint.

CLOSE MULTIPLE WINDOWS

By holding down CTRL and clicking on each button in the taskbar. Then, RIGHT CLICK on any one of those and select "CLOSE" from the pop up menu. If you failed to save any open files, a prompt will remind you.

COMPLAINT CENTER

http://www.ifccfbi.gov

"The Internet Fraud Complaint Center is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National White Collar Crime Center. For victims of Internet fraud, IFCC provides a convenient and easy-to-use reporting mechanism that alerts authorities of a suspected criminal and civil violation." Now, of course WE aren't going to become victimized by Internet fraud; but just in case, it might be a good idea to keep this URL handy.

KEYBOARD LAYOUTS FOR PEOPLE WHO TYPE WITH ONE HAND OR FINGER MAKING IT EASIER FOR PEOPLE TO TYPE WITH TWO HANDS, ONE HAND OR ONE FINGER

Overview

Microsoft distributes keyboard layouts (called "Dvorak" layouts) to help make the most frequently typed characters on a keyboard more accessible to people who have difficulty using the standard keyboard layout (called the "QWERTY" layout). Dvorak layouts reduce the amount of motion required to type common English text. This may help avoid some types of repetitive strain injuries associated with typing. Studies have also shown an increase in typing speed and accuracy when using the Dvorak layout for two hands.

INTERNET EXPLORER SHORTCUT KEYS
(Revised)

In Microsoft Internet Explorer, you can add "www." to the beginning and ".com" to the end of the text typed in the Address bar. This does not always work in Netscape. To do this type a word, like "google", in the address bar and hit ENTER.

You can also type in "www.google" and hit ENTER to add the "http://" and the "..com".. If the page you are looking for does not show up, you will at least get a search engine that lists web entries that they think matches your typed word.

********************

FIND SOMETHING ON A WEB PAGE

Use your CTRL key and the keyboard F key. A window pops up. In the space provided, type the word you're looking for and click on the FIND BUTTON or the FIND NEXT button. This also works in MSWord documents.

TIP: If you forget to add Web pages to your FAVORITES or LINKS bar, click the HISTORY button on the toolbar. The HISTORY list shows where you've been today, yesterday, or a few weeks ago. Click a name from the list to display the page(s).

If that does not resolve the problem, it is suggested that you bring the specifics of your problem to our Open House (Tues. & Thur., 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.). Members are encouraged to offer volunteer assistance when they are able. If none of these suggestions fixes the problem, your only recourse is to seek professional help. It is not the Club's policy to recommend professional computer technicians. Usually the best technical help will come from the manufacturer of your computer and you may even be under a warrantee program.
