THE NEW YORK RENAISSANCE FAIRE

Held in Sterling Forest, Tuxedo, New York; Saturdays & Sundays, plus Labor Day Monday; August 3 through September 15, 2002. For more information on prices and facilities, directions, amenities, events, and more, go to the web site: www.renfair.com/NY/ RENEWING

YOUR DOMAIN NAME

If you have your own domain name for your personal or business web site, don’t forget to renew it before it expires. Don’t wait until the last minute! Many porn sites are scooping up expired names as soon as they become available. This means that when you think you are going to an innocent site, you are taken to a porn site instead. These new owners keep the name that they purchase, but change the content for their own purposes. I have added my renewal date to my Outlook Calendar to remind me to renew on time.

APPLIANCE MANUALS

If you are in need of a manual for any of your appliances, see if the company has a web site to order a new manual. Or perhaps you can get a customer service telephone number to speak to someone about ordering. Although my G.E. self-cleaning oven manual was not available, there was a similar new model that I found to have the instructions I needed. I downloaded it and printed it for future use.

A ROBOT FOR ASSISTED LIVING FACILITIES

"Pearl's chief task is to remind people of their appointments, their mealtimes and social events, and to escort them to their destinations," The New Scientist magazine said on Wednesday, July 31, 2002. Pearl is the second prototype of a personal robotic assistant developed by researchers from the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. The Nursebot can remind patients about important activities such as taking medicine, eating meals, visiting the bathroom, or scheduling medical appointments. Robots such as Pearl even can relay TV schedules and weather forecasts. You can read more about this robot at the following two links.

“PEARL” TEST YOUR IQ

A site for testing IQ was interesting because it features several quizzes that you can take for free. Some of the links will redirect you to another site where you will need to offer various informational data about yourself. Others are contained on the source site and do not ask for personal data. The 3rd test on the list, dated 2001-09-01, looked like an enjoyable quiz. See for yourself at http://www.allthetests.com/intelligence.php3

KLEZ TOPS THE VIRUS CHARTS
By John Leyden Posted: 31/07/2002 at 15:23 GMT

http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/56/26473.html

Yet again, variants of the Klez worm are by far the most common viruses circulating on the Internet according to Message Labs which stopped more than 475,000 copies of the virus in July, down from in excess of 788,000 infected emails it blocked in June. It's the fourth month in succession that Klez has topped monthly virus charts. Message Labs reports that virus infection rates are currently running at around one per 256 emails. Klez is a mass-mailing worm, which searches the Windows address book for email addresses and sends messages to all recipients that it finds. The worm uses its own SMTP engine to send the messages. It can also spoof the 'From' in messages, a factor which has resulted in widespread confusion about the bug. The subject and attachment name of incoming emails is randomly chosen, making it harder for users to spot. The attachment will have one of the following extensions: .bat, .exe, .pif or .scr. Klez is capable of infecting files.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JULIA CHILD
San Francisco, Aug. 2, 2002; (CBS/The Early Show)

Bon appetit and happy birthday to the queen of the kitchen. It was party time in 20 different cities where Julia Child's 90th birthday was celebrated Aug.1. However, she only could be in one place at a time. So, she chose San Francisco as party central. CBS News Correspondent Sandra Hughes reports that Child’s actual 90th birthday is Aug. 15. She will be in Maine that day, at a private gathering of family and friends. That's why the more public festivities started early. The 40-year veteran of television is still feisty and cooking. As the "French Chef," she has had an impact on up-and-coming chefs and most food fads of the last four decades. Child is and always will be a "back to basics" kind of cook. She uses real butter, real fat and real meat. She always followed some personal rules for not overindulging. More interesting facts about Julia at this link: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/08/01/earlyshow/leisure/celebspot/main517184.shtml
