WARTIME CARTOONS

When we hear the name Dr. Seuss, we think of allthose wonderful children's books. But beyond green eggs and ham, Theodor Seuss Geisel, AKA Dr. Seuss, served during World War II as chief editorial cartoonist for a New York newspaper. Some 200 of his wartime cartoons, from historian Richard H. Minear's collection, "Dr. Seuss Goes to War," is brought to the Internet at: http://orpheus.ucsd.edu/speccoll/dspolitic/ . If you click on the cartoons, they enlarge for readability.

TIP FROM LOCKERGNOME.COM

"Netscape"does have one rather nice feature that can be invoked with slow loading pages to find out what's gumming up the works. Navigator has a habit of preventing the display of a page if JUST ONE image is broken, sometimes hanging up for up to 2 (or more) minutes. By hitting Control + Alt + T, Netscape will show you a list of pending items left to download and their full URL, giving you a good idea of what the problem may be. Banner servers are notorious for breaking completely or failing to respond in a timely manner, thus you may see ad links / images listed quite often. You'll also see your connection status, which tells you precisely how many connections are required to finish the page as well as the concurrent connection limit that your browser is currently configured to handle.

VIRUS PROTECTION VIA THE WEB

http://housecall.antivirus.com/ "Think your computer might be coming down with a little something? Anti-virus software is good to have at your disposal. This is available free on the Web; sit back, let it scan, and hope your PC isn't infected. You don't have to register if you don't want to."

VOCABULARY SITE MAP

-- A listing at a web site of what exactly is on that site. If a site has a site map, then finding what you need should be no problem. SMS -- "Short Message Service" is a way to send text messages of up to 160 characters to a mobile phone or other SMS-enabled de vice. It is NOT the same as paging. With SMS messages, a phone doesn't have to be active, nor does it have to be within range at the time the message is sent. The message is saved until the phone is within range (and active) and can be delivered. SMS messages can be sent to digital phones from other digital phones, through telephone interfaces or via websites. Sometimes this is a better alternative than paging . Note: "SMS" also stands for "System Management Server" from Microsoft.

SOS - HVCC Help Line

The Board of Directors has been asked to clarify club policy regarding services involving computer problems. The names posted on page 5 are volunteers who will try to walk you through a computer problem that you may be experiencing. If that does not resolve the glitch, it is suggested that you bring the specifics of your problem to one of our Open Houses (Th 1-3PM and Fr 10:30-12:30). Members are encouraged to offer volunteer assistance when they are able. If none of these suggestions fixes the problem, your only recourse is to seek professional help. It is not the Club's policy to recommend professional computer technicians.

Congratulations to the Winners of the door prize raffle at the Computer Club General Membership Meeting on Wednesday, August 08, 2001:

Thank you, Jeannette Levy, for the following submissions:

My kids love going to the Web, and they keep track of their passwords by writing them on Post-it notes. I noticed their Disney password was "MickeyMinnieGoofyPluto" and asked why it was so long. "use," my son explained, "they say it has to have at least four characters." - contributed by Adriane Carroll to the Readers Digest Virtual Hilarity column

------------------------------------------------

When I signed up with an Internet provider, I was asked to select a password, but every word I picked had already been chosen by someone else. After nearly 30 minutes of frustration, I typed, "I give up." My provider's reply: "Password already in use."

THE BRITISH LIBRARY

The British Library has put two Gutenberg bibles online. The library photographed two different editions of the Gutenberg Bible printed around 1454 AD to 1455 AD. The photographs do make for some very large downloads but the detail is incredible. We're big fans of old books but on our own would never get the chance to thumb through these beautiful volumes. But online we can flip through them to our hearts' content. Other neat items on the site include leaves from Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks. Courtesy of the following:
