Bandwidth: What is it?

The term bandwidth is most often used to refer to the transmission speed of computer data, and it most commonly refers to the speed of an Internet connection. High bandwidth (e.g., a D.S.L. - Digital Subscriber Line connection or cable modem) is faster than low bandwidth (e.g., a dial-up modem). Mistakenly, bandwidth is sometimes tossed around to mean speed in general. Do not mistake bandwidth as the means to expand and speed up your computer. If you are having trouble with poor PC performance, it has more to do with the computer itself. A computer needs a certain amount of available hard drive space to run efficiently. You should try to keep at least 10 percent of your hard drive's space free at all times.
After you have deleted as many old files as possible, you may want to defragment your drive to clean up your hard disk. To use the software that comes with Windows to do this, go to the Start menu and choose Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and Disk Defragmenter. Defragging your hard disk helps your computer store the files it has more efficiently. If you cannot delete enough files, you may want to think about adding another hard drive to your system. Adding more RAM can also increase your system's performance.
