Mark Your Calendar -- COMING EVENTS!GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING Heritage Hall WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 2002 10:00 - 11:30 am "The Future of the Internet" by John R. Patrick, President of Attitude LLC and former Vice President of Internet Technology at IBM xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx PC EXPO Celebrates its 20th year as New York's leading technology event * JUNE 26th - 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. * Javits Center, New York City. * Register at Activities Desk. * Bus Transportation. * No cost if you use registration No. AKATX xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx The President's Corner The sale (free distribution) of surplus accessories, which followed the regular Club meeting on April 10th, was a huge success. More than 90% of the items available were taken. The result was that only a paper shopping bag full of items needed to be discarded. We are happy that the members found items they could utilize. There were no warranties with the items, so if they should not work, please do not return them for a refund. All sales are final! Our Treasurer, Jean Crosby, was very busy during the period preceding the meeting; thus, there was no door prize secured. Therefore, there will be a drawing for two door prizes at the May meeting. At the April meeting I overlooked announcing the annual club picnic has been scheduled for Wednesday, June 5th, 6:00 P.M.. It will be held on the patio of the Meeting House. We have reserved the Music Room to use in the event of inclement weather. The picnic is a enjoyable affair and is well attended. There is no definite price yet, so just mark your calendar. The price will be forth coming. The club, in cooperation with the Genealogy Club, has subscribed to Ancestry.com to allow the searching of their databases and the various censuses which they have available. Members of both clubs can avail themselves of this opportunity during open house on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A member of the Genealogy Club will be in attendance to assist you. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx INTERNET AUDIO MIX This multi-sound recording and mixing utility lets you drag sounds in, record from CD or microphone, edit on the run, overdub and mix multiple tracks of .wav and .mp3 files, preview your work, adjust for volume, pan, and playback rate, and generally do a lot more than the price tag would suggest. Some are downloadable. Try it free at http://www.acoustica.com . They can all be located at the following link and apply to Windows, MAC, Unix, foreign languages, Netscape Communicator and Netscape Navigator. http://home.netscape.com/download/archive/client_archive47x.html Courtesy of Neat Net Tricks/Lyris newsletter xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx "Inanimate objects can be classified scientifically into three major categories; 1) those that don't work, 2) those that break down, and 3) those that get lost." Russell Baker xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx LIVE MANUALS At http://www.livemanuals.com you can search by product, product category, or manufacturer to see how their merchandise works and get useful warranty and support information to include names, addresses, and telephone numbers of manufacturers. User manuals are available on line along with interactive help. The nearest repair centers are available. You can store model and warranty information for easy retrieval later if you experience problems. Even if you enter the incorrect name, you will be able to search from an alphabetical list that becomes available after entering a manufacturer's name. I entered General Electric, came up with "no results," clicked on the alpha list "G," and found what I wanted. It was listed as "GE...." The Microsoft "Designed for Windows" logo identifies hardware and software products that have been designed and tested to meet Microsoft standards for compatibility with Windows(r) 98 and Windows NT(r) Workstation 4.0. http://www.microsoft.com/hcl Courtesy of Neat Net Tricks/Lyris newsletter xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx "Computer dating is fine, if you're a computer." -Rita May Brown xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx VOCABULARY PAGE: MOVING PICTURES EXPERTS GROUP ("MPEG") MPEG is a standard for compressing sound and movie files into an attractive format for downloading--or even streaming--across the Internet. The MPEG-1 standard streams video and sound data at 150 kilobytes per second--the same rate as a single-speed CD-ROM drive--take key frames of video and fill only the areas that change between the frames. Unfortunately, MPEG-1 produces only adequate quality video, far below that of standard TV. MPEG-2 compression improves things dramatically. With MPEG-2, a properly compressed video can be shown at near-laserdisc clarity with a CD-quality stereo soundtrack. For that reason, modern video delivery mediums, such as digital satellite services and DVD, use MPEG-2. BITMAP ("BMP") BMP (often pronounced "bump") was developed by Microsoft and is the native graphics format for Windows users. The images you see when Windows starts up and closes, and the wallpaper that adorns your desktop, are all in BMP format. BMP tends to store graphical data inefficiently, so the files it creates are larger than they need to be. JOINT PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPERTS GROUP ("JPEG") This file format for color-rich images was developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group committee. JPEG compresses graphics of photographic color depth better than competing file formats like GIF, and it retains a high degree of color fidelity. This makes JPEG files smaller and therefore quicker to download. You can choose how much to compress a JPEG file, but the smaller you compress the file, the more color information will be lost. GRAPHICS INTERCHANGE FORMAT ("GIF") Most color images and backgrounds on the Web are GIF files. This compact file format is ideal for graphics that use only a few colors, and it was once the most popular format for online color photos. GIF images are limited to 256 colors, but JPEGs can contain up to 16 million colors--and they can look almost as good as a photograph. CompuServe developed GIF in 1987, calling it GIF87, and two years later added new features such as interlacing, transparency, and animation to create the format known as GIF89a. People don't usually distinguish between the two GIF versions, so if someone refers to an image as a "GIF89" rather than simply a "GIF," it's probably animated. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx S.O.S. - HVCC Help Line: Ken Pelletier 264-2310 Bob Greene 264-9747 Several members have volunteered to assist in the help duties and are available between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. They have specified the particular areas in which they are experienced. Give them an opportunity to assist you with your problems.
All help personnel are volunteers who will try to walk you through a computer problem that you may be experiencing. If that does not resolve the problem, it is suggested that you bring the specifics of your problem to our Open House (Tues. & Thur., 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.). Members are encouraged to offer volunteer assistance when they are able. If none of these suggestions fixes the problem, your only recourse is to seek professional help. It is not the Club's policy to recommend professional computer technicians. Usually the best technical help will come from the manufacturer of your computer and you may even be under a warranty program. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx A Toddler's Perspective:1. If I like it, it's mine 2. If it's in my hand, it's mine 3. If I can take it from you, it's mine 4. If I had it a little while ago, it's mine 5. If it's mine, it must never appear to be yours in any way 6. If I'm doing or building something, all the pieces are mine 7. If it looks just like mine, it's mine 8. If I think it's mine, it's mine 9. If it's yours and I steal it, it's mine 10. If I .............! ooops, WAIT! I've been reading Microsoft's Business Plan! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx APRIL CLASSESFile and Disk ManagementMONDAY, WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY April 22, 24, 25, 29, May 1, 2 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Six Sessions $20.00 Goal: To learn how to manage your files, folders, and disks.
